Harvard-Brown Division B mini-SO Tournament

We are super excited to announce that HUSO will be partnering with Brown Science Olympiad this year to run our annual Division B Mini-SO Tournament. It will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2021 and will cover the 16 events on the 2021 Mini Science Olympiad Event Slate.

Registration Details

For our Division B tournament this year, we will be hosting 100 teams.  The application will open* for all teams on Monday 9/28, and close** on Friday 10/9. Teams will be notified of their decision within about a week of the application deadline; please read this entire post for details on team selection.

The application will take place via a Google Form that is posted at the beginning of the application period; sign up here for updates. The selection process will proceed as follows:

  • During Round 1, all teams who competed at the 2020 HUSO Division B Invitational will be accepted.

In addition, there will be two rounds of lottery-based decisions to fill the remaining spots:

  • During Round 2, at least twenty-five (25) non-returning teams who come from under-resourced schools, whether by Title I status (or equivalent) or underrepresentation in STEM, will be admitted.

  • During Round 3, all teams not already admitted will have an equal opportunity to be accepted to one of the remaining spots. The lottery will also generate a waitlist should accepted teams decide not to attend.

Up to two teams per school may register for the tournament. During Round 1, each school is guaranteed the larger number of teams that competed at one of our tournaments this previous season; during Round 2 and Round 3, up to one team per school will be accepted while remaining teams will be waitlisted.

Note that teams’ spots are not confirmed until the registration process is completed, including payment of a nominal registration fee of $20, with a deadline announced after notice of acceptance. Teams that do not register and pay by the deadline forfeit their spot, which will be offered to the next eligible team(s) on the waitlist. If this registration fee is a burden to your team this year, please request a scholarship to waive the fee in your application -- scholarship requests will be approved for any fair reason. Teams will not be at a disadvantage in the lottery for requesting a scholarship: please do not let the fee deter your team from applying.

The 2021 HUSO-BSO MiniSO Invitational will not be mailing physical medals or awards; instead, all teams will receive a certificate of participation, as well as virtual certificates for distinctive performances. The competition platform of choice will be announced at a later date after our Logistics team has carefully tested potential platforms.

Please email harvardbrownso2021@gmail.com with any questions.

**Teams that sign up after the registration deadline (regardless of returning or underserved status) will also be added to the waitlist on a first-come, first-serve basis, after teams that registered by the deadline.
