Harvard Undergraduate Science Olympiad

Our mission is to make science accessible to all, regardless of background

The Harvard Undergraduate Science Olympiad is a premier student-run organization dedicated toward advancing STEM educational equity through competitions and mentorship. Over 400 middle school students and 800 high school students across the nation participate in our tournaments each year. At HUSO, our team works to foster intellectual and creative growth within the K-12 STEM community by preparing students for competitive academic tournaments and facilitating inquiry-based scientific exploration. We invite you to become a part of our organization and lead a movement where anyone can achieve academic excellence within the field of science.

Democratizing Science

This upcoming year, we will be launching our HUSO Online Initiative, a web series bridging the educational gaps caused by remote learning. Our newest, third tournament—the HUSO Online Open—will be focused on bringing down the physical and financial barriers surrounding scientific engagement.

HUSO is Home

Hosting a 1000+ person tournament is no easy task. We always look for diverse talent in our recruitment process, sourcing test writers, software developers, lesson creators, graphic designers, and so much more. It takes a dream team to make HUSO happen, and we pride ourselves on the wide range of skills found in our organization. And for the first time ever, the HUSO team is welcoming non-Harvard affiliates to join us for our HUSO Online initiatives. No matter your background or prior experience, there’s a space for you at HUSO.

Meet the HUSO Teams

Logistics

The Logisticians are the hidden architects, the masterminds behind the scenes of the details of Harvard’s Science Olympiad tournaments and Service Initiatives. The Logistics Board ensures that the high-quality content prepared by the Events and Service Boards is delivered with commensurate quality, no matter the medium.

Events

On the Events team, you will help run each event of the miniSO or HUSO Online Open tournaments. Event supervisors are fully involved with the crafting, execution, and administration of the tests that are the heart of HUSO. For the HUSO Online Open, the Events team will be working with a dedicated team of lesson planners and technical support staff to create educational content, addressing the educational gaps caused by remote learning.

Service

Service spearheads the HUSO Online initiative and community outreach, ensuring that our tournaments and resources are focused on the schools that need it most. The work done by Service reaches across disciplines, including partnership organizers, content creators, lesson plan developers, and video editors + graphic designers.

External

The External team works with the Logistics and Events boards to ensure that the infrastructure powering HUSO is up and running. This includes creating and maintaining the software platforms that host our remote tournaments and securing sponsorships to empower HUSO financially. External also brings industry leaders and speakers to our tournaments, inspiring closer connections between students and the forefront of scientific excellence.

Internal

On Internal, you’ll focus on bridging together the members of the board and the general team in these remote times. You can also help craft the designs and branding of HUSO, helping make the overarching organization experience more welcoming and coherent.
